Pro's and Con's of Marble Countertops

Marble used to be a trendy choice for countertops.

On the Pro's side:

It is beautiful, offering some fantastic patterns and colors. It is heat resistant to a point, do not leave anything hot on it for an extended amount of time. Using hot pads is always recommended with every stone type. Marble is also cold to the touch and dissipates heat quickly. Many high-end confectionaries use Marble in their kitchens, Marble it is perfect to temper chocolate. Marble countertops make a striking statement in any room, adding an almost otherworldly aura of elegance that's capable of making eyes-pop.

On the Cons side:

Marble is very porous, and it will stain if not sealed every six months to a year. There are some products on the market that help remove stains, but there is no guarantee that they will work. As well as being porous, Marble is soft and can be scratched or etched very quickly. Any sharp object or sliding something across the countertops will scratch it. If you leave anything harsh on the surface, like a lemon, it will eat into the countertop and take away the shine in that spot. One way to get around this is to have honed marble tops. Honed is where the surface is not shiny but has a rough finish. As far as cost goes, there is a wide variety of Marble at different price points. So if you can maintain Marble and are not worried about scratching, Marble might be right for you.
